Tour Overview

The Rongai Route is one of the easiest and least crowded routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering high success rates. It begins on the northern side, near the Kenyan border, and descends via the Marangu Route on the southern side. The route provides diverse scenery and breathtaking views from multiple vantage points.

  • Trailhead Access: 2.5-hour drive from Moshi, passing villages and coffee plantations.
  • Alternative Access: From Amboseli National Park, Kenya (approx. 2 hours with border crossing).

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport – Transfer to Arusha city

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a driver will meet you after you clear immigration and customs. Look for a sign with your name. The drive to Arusha city takes approximately 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

Today, you will have a trek orientation with your Kilimanjaro guide, an opportunity to rent any necessary equipment, and time to pack for the trek. Any extra luggage not needed for the climb can be left at the hotel.

If time allows, we recommend taking an extra rest day before starting your trek.

Day 2: Drive to Rongai Gate – Hike to Simba Camp

After breakfast, drive to the village of Nale Moru, which takes about two hours, including a stop to obtain trekking permits at Marangu. Upon arrival, register for the trek and meet your porters. The hike begins on a wide trail that passes through farmland and pine forest before ascending gradually through a scenic forested area with diverse wildlife. As the forest clears, you will arrive at Simba Camp on the edge of the moorland zone, offering breathtaking views over the Kenyan plains.

Day 3: Hike from Simba Camp to Second Cave

Today’s trek involves a steady ascent to Second Cave, offering stunning views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields along the crater rim.

  • Distance: 6km (4mi)
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Day 4: Hike from Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

Continue across the moorland on a smaller trail towards the towering peaks of Mawenzi. The campsite is nestled in a sheltered valley, surrounded by giant Senecio plants.

  • Distance: 9km (5mi)
  • Hiking Time: 2-3 hours
  • Habitat: Semi-desert

Day 5: Hike from Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

A short but steep ascent takes you up grassy slopes, offering magnificent views. As you approach Mawenzi Tarn, the vegetation diminishes. The campsite is spectacularly located beneath the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The afternoon is free for rest or an acclimatization hike.

Day 6: Hike from Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Cross the desolate lunar landscape of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut at the base of Kibo Crater Wall. The rest of the day is dedicated to rest and preparation for the summit attempt.

  • Distance: 9km (5mi)
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 7: Summit Day – Hike from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak – Descend to Horombo Hut

The ascent to the summit begins around midnight. The steep climb over scree and snow leads to Gilman’s Point (5,700m/18,700ft) on the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After taking in the incredible views, descend back to Kibo for lunch and then continue to Horombo Hut.

  • Distance: 6km (4mi) ascent / 15km (9mi) descent
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up / 3-4 hours down

Day 8: Descend from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Drive to Arusha city

After breakfast, descend through moorland to Mandara Hut, then continue through lush rainforest to the Marangu Gate. The lower section of the trail can be wet and muddy, so trekking poles and gaiters may be helpful. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Arusha city. Upon arrival at the hotel, it’s time to celebrate your achievement.

Day 9: Departure from Arusha city

If you are beginning a safari, your guide will meet you at your hotel. Alternatively, we can arrange a transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
