Duration: 7 Days / 6 Nights on the Mountain | Accommodation: Tented Camps
The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey” route, is one of the most scenic and popular routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike the Marangu Route, climbers sleep in tents, and meals are served in a dining tent or picnic-style outdoors. This route offers a gradual ascent, making acclimatization easier and increasing the chances of a successful summit.
Best for:
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, a driver will meet you after you go through immigration and customs. Look for someone holding a sign with your name. The transfer to Moshi takes about 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
At the hotel, you’ll have a trek orientation with your Kilimanjaro guide, and you’ll have the chance to get any rental items you may need and pack for the trek. Extra luggage can be left at the hotel for safekeeping.
If you have time, it’s recommended to rest for an extra day before starting the trek.
After breakfast, drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, about 30-45 minutes from Moshi. The trek begins through the rainforest, where the trail can be muddy and slippery at lower elevations. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. The first day’s hike leads to Machame Camp.
Today, leave the rain forest and ascend through the moorland. The trail continues along a rocky ridge, eventually turning west to cross a river gorge. The hike ends at the Shira Camp, offering great views of the surrounding area.
Continue to the Lava Tower (4,650m/15,250ft), an important acclimatization point. After reaching the tower, descend towards Barranco Camp. This day is vital for acclimatization, as it allows your body to adjust to the higher elevations.
Begin the day with a steep climb up the Barranco Wall, then proceed to Karanga Camp. The camp lies in a beautiful alpine desert area with spectacular views.
Today, continue to Barafu Camp, which marks the completion of the South Circuit. From here, you’ll get views of the summit from different angles. The camp is a great place to rest and prepare for the summit push.
Begin the summit climb between midnight and 2 am. Ascend through scree and ice-capped sections towards Stella Point (5,756m/18,877ft) on the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After taking in the incredible views, descend to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
After breakfast, continue the descent to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. The trail can be wet and muddy at lower elevations. From the gate, drive back to your hotel in Arusha for a celebratory rest.
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. If you’re continuing on to a safari, your guide will meet you at your hotel. We can also arrange a transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport.
