The Great Migration is the largest overland migration of animals on Earth. Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and 350,000 gazelles move in a continuous clockwise circuit through the Serengeti ecosystem โ following the rains and the grass. Here's where they are every month of the year.
Where: Southern Serengeti โ Ndutu area, short-grass plains near Ngorongoro. This is one of the most spectacular times to visit. Up to 8,000 calves are born every single day during February. The concentration of predators is extraordinary โ cheetahs, lions, and hyenas hunt the vulnerable newborns while hundreds of thousands of wildebeest protect their young.
Where: Central Serengeti, moving through Seronera. As the short rains arrive and the southern plains dry, the great columns begin moving northward. This is "green season" โ fewer tourists, lower prices, lush dramatic scenery. Game viewing is still excellent; the herds are simply spread across a wider area.
Where: Western Serengeti, Grumeti River. The first river crossings of the year happen here. Enormous Nile crocodiles wait in the Grumeti River as the herds attempt to cross. The western Serengeti is more wooded and green โ a completely different landscape to the open plains.
Where: Northern Serengeti, Kogatende/Lamai area, Mara River. This is the most dramatic stage โ the most photographed wildlife event on Earth. Thousands of wildebeest launch themselves into the crocodile-infested Mara River in a frenzy of noise, splashing, and chaos. Camps in the northern Serengeti fill up fast; book well in advance.
Where: Moving back south through central and eastern Serengeti. As the short rains arrive in November, the herds begin the return journey south. By December they're back in the Ndutu area, ready for another calving season. The circle is complete.
There is no single "best" time โ each phase of the migration offers something different and extraordinary. Our recommendation depends on what you want to see:
