There is a particular magic to ending a Tanzania safari in Zanzibar. One morning you're watching a lion cross the plains at dawn in the Serengeti — by that evening you're watching the Indian Ocean turn copper in a Nungwi sunset with a cold Kilimanjaro beer in hand. The contrast is remarkable, the transition seamless, and the combination has become one of the most popular luxury travel pairings in the world.
The Logistics
The transition is straightforward when planned properly. After your final game drive, you drive or fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (or Arusha's smaller Coastal Aviation airstrip) for a 55-minute direct flight to Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. We arrange all transfers — a driver meets you at arrivals and has you checked into your beach hotel within 30 minutes of landing. No complex connections, no overnight layovers.
Which Beach is Right for You?
Nungwi (North Coast): Tanzania's most popular beach resort area. The northern tip of the island sits outside the tidal lagoon system, meaning the sea is deep, calm, and swimmable virtually year-round — a significant advantage over Zanzibar's east coast. Vibrant bar and restaurant scene. Best for travellers who want activity, water sports and social atmosphere alongside their beach time.
Matemwe (Northeast): Quiet, romantic, and genuinely uncrowded. Excellent house reef for snorkelling directly from the beach. Only boutique hotels and eco-lodges. The tidal flats at low tide — stretching hundreds of metres in absolute silence — are extraordinary. Best for couples and guests wanting genuine seclusion.
Paje (East Coast): Tanzania's kitesurfing capital, with consistent strong winds from June to September. Bohemian, casual beach village atmosphere. Long white sand beach. Also excellent for stand-up paddleboarding and freediving. More youthful and active in character.
Stone Town (West Coast): UNESCO World Heritage Site and Zanzibar's historic Arab-Swahili trading port. Narrow labyrinthine lanes, ornately carved wooden doors, spice markets, Persian baths, and the unmissable Forodhani night food market on the waterfront. Best experienced as 1–2 nights before heading to the beach rather than as your primary beach destination.
3 nights: Enough to decompress from a safari and get a genuine taste of the island.
4–5 nights: Our most common recommendation — time for the beach, a snorkelling excursion, a spice tour, and a Stone Town afternoon.
7 nights: Ideal for guests wanting total relaxation. Explore multiple beaches, take a dhow sunset cruise, and visit the Jozani forest (home of the rare red colobus monkey).
