When is the Best Time to Visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is genuinely a year-round destination — every single month has something exceptional to offer. But timing matters enormously: wildlife densities, migration position, weather conditions, crowd levels, and lodge prices vary dramatically across the calendar. Here is the complete, honest guide.

June–October: Peak Dry Season — The Best Overall

The long dry season concentrates wildlife around permanent water sources and thins vegetation, creating the best game-viewing conditions of the year. Every major park is firing on all cylinders. The Mara River crossings peak August–October. Clear skies produce crisp morning light and reliable afternoon photography. Expect higher prices (30–50% above low season) and more visitors at the most popular camps — but for the majority of first-time visitors, this is the season worth prioritising.

January–February: Calving Season — Spectacular Wildlife

Tanzania's short dry season between the two rains delivers extraordinary conditions in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area. The calving season produces the highest density of predator activity on the continent — and significantly fewer tourists than the June–October peak. Tarangire National Park is outstanding in these months: the largest dry-season elephant concentration in the world and superb lion and leopard viewing.

March–May: Green Season — Value, Beauty & Solitude

The long rains transform the savannah into a lush, green, bird-filled landscape with dramatic cloudy skies and superb photography light. Lodge rates drop 30–40%, and some remote camps are entirely to yourself. Some camps close for April–May maintenance. Roads can be challenging in heavy rains. For photographers, serious birders, and travellers who value solitude over guaranteed sunshine, this is a hidden gem of the Tanzania calendar.

November: Short Rains — Brief and Rewarding

Brief afternoon and evening showers (usually finished by morning) bring fresh grass and a spectacular influx of migratory birds — November is the best birding month in Tanzania. Wildlife viewing remains excellent. Good value, manageable crowds, and the landscape is at its most photogenic. The short rains rarely last all day and rarely disrupt game drives.
